Sermon: Don’t Get Stuck at Haran
[Genesis 11:27-28]
This is the account of Terah’s family. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot. 28 But Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, the land of his birth, while his father, Terah, was still living.
[Genesis 11:31-32]
One day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram’s wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Haran’s child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there. 32 Terah lived for 205 years and died while still in Haran.
[Genesis 12:1-3]
The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”
Observations:
Abraham refused to be limited by what happened in his first 75 years.
[Genesis 12:4]
So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.
2. Abraham’s purpose required him to go beyond his family and everything familiar.
[Hebrews 11:8-9]
It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. 9 And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents…
3. What God did with Abraham is what God is still doing.
[Hebrews 11:9]
And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise.
[John 8:56]
Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.”
